What in your analogy of the unfinished game would constitute "cake" and what would constitute "cake-mix"?
As what you're getting is always a piece of the whole, it seems like the answer would have to be very arbitrary.
It also seems that in order for your metaphor to hold, you're only going to be satisfied sampling the finished product...
