Actually, it was New Zealanders themselves that chose the nomenclature 'kiwis'.

Prior to the beginning of the war, New Zealand was totally obscure and unknown to the rest of the world. New Zealanders realised the only way they could be recognised as a populated country and potential tourist attraction was to define their national identity in a way that took advantage of Australia's prominence and booming tourism industry. Thus, New Zealand became known as 'that country that is at war with Australia', and New Zealanders as 'kiwis' as a reference to the origin of New Zealand's national identity.
