Actually, unless I messed something up, v1.3 was missing the map and a tile bmp that were in the previous versions, so I added it to the .dmod version. .dmods will almost always be smaller than .zips (it uses better compression), except perhaps in some rare cases (like zipping a file with no file size, or something equally silly).
The idea behind .dmod's was to make D-Mods easier to install, without having to mess around with downloading an appropriate zip program (or figure out how to make Windows XP's work), creating a directory, making sure folders are extracted properly, and all that stuff that we take for granted. Sure, it only saves like 30-60 seconds per D-Mod, but I hope it makes things easier for users that aren't uber computer users.
