Well yeh, if you're talking about the actual portal looking things, I also remember finding them by pushing random objects (mainly rocks?).
Haven't had an in-depth look, but at a quick glance at the source it appears that there's a few sprites on each screen with "rng-h.c" attached, and they have chance (based on the editor_seq, not sure where that's set without going searching), to attach the "warp" script to themselves. The warp has the push procedure, which makes the door sound and transports Dink to the screen containing the portal.
