That isn't going to happen. But someone else did it for him. They called it Freedink. You should check it out.

Not sure if it fixes all this, though; it tries to be bug-compatible.

About the palette: that is explained, I don't remember where. Probably DinkC.txt. The palette is loaded from the loading screen and never changed after that (or only at loadbmp or something like that). So if you save the loading screen in a different palette than the rest, all your colors are wrong. That problem shouldn't happen with 24 bit images, and AFAIK it doesn't in Freedink; I have no idea what 1.08 does.
