SimonK's Happy Releases
SimonK has gone on a new release streak and brings us 3 files :
Dink Goes Boating
Alternative Savebot Graphics
Dink Goes Boating Graphics Pack
I guess I should elaborate.
Dink Goes Boating is a TMOD (Tutorial Mod) with a lot of attention to detail. It's goal : To teach the flock (read: Community Members) how to script.
Aside from being a valuable source of information, it's also a plain romp which can be enjoyed by anyone.
The second file is a graphics pack which includes one new sequence. It is described by Simon as an alternative for the original savebot but he also adds it can easily be designated another use due to its odd design.
I think you're all able to understand what the last of the files includes. In case you don't, read the File Description!

SimonK, why dont you just release the dmod + graphics pack in 1 zipped file (ex: Dink Goes Boating, Dink Goes Boating G.Pack)
If you dont .dir the graphics files, then you dont have to upload a graphics pack too, thus saving hd space (fileplanet, yahoo)

Simply because loading graphics on the fly and having smooth screen changes works best when graphics are ff'd. I did intend to do only one release, but I found I had to dir.ff the graphics to keep the TMOD running smoothly.
It is true theprophet. It is much faster ff'd. However, I have the feeling that SimonK also wants to have more files listed under his name. - Xanthos
If I really wanted more files released I would have split up each of the graphics packs in PQ as follows:
Mermaid - 1 zip file
Cthunik - 1 zip file
Basilisk - 1 zip file
Skard - 1 zip file
rowboat - 1 zip file
sailboat - 1 zip file
frigate - 1 zip file
Water Spirit - 1 zip file
Earth Spirit - 1 zip file
Tree Spirit - 1 zip file
Air Spirit - 1 zip file
Green blob - 1 zip file
Red blob - 1 zip file
Dragon - 1 zip file
frog-bot - 1 zip file
necro-bot 1 zip file
etc....
Instead there is a blobs pack, and enemies pack, and I think I did a NPC pack... or maybe I forgot to... Seeing as no-ones asked for them, I haven't bothered.
I also have other graphics I haven't released - including new forcefield - it's kinda blue and retro looking - I was going to use them in Necromancer, but I've cancelled that project now.
ff'd graphics work better (not faster, but cleaner without a brief flash of the in coming screen) with screen changes/fade downs if you have many new graphics, irrespective of the speed of your computer. That is my opinion and I'm going to stick to it.
I choose not to release the TMOD with the development files combined as it would increase the size of the download - pure and simple.

Woah, sorry Xan got you on the defensive Simon, I think he was just kidding around about the wanting more files.
From my own tests I do recall it being faster due to the structure of ff files. Specifically when they are loaded using load_sequence_now in a main() procedure. I noticed it most in large frame count sequences (such as walk). It stems from the c standard library that the dink exe (and almost all programs use). There is some overhead involved with opening a file under windows. Multiply this overhead 50 times and it does get noticable.
Anyway, like I said. excuse Xans unique sense of humor (the TMOD was great btw).

So blob's aren't enemies now?
I think you should release the NPC pack (I've noticed the non-appearance of it) as not only does it give new NPC's, but it also enales more alternative hero d-mods.
Yippee!!
And is Necromancer really cancelled?

Hmmm... I'll see what I can do about the NPC pack. I guess it would help those that haven't got PQ or just want... Skard or Cthunik or something.
Haven't got much free time anymore. New job, old stress, blah, blah, blah.
Since I've done nothing with Necromancer for a year, I think it's safe to say it's died a still-born death. My own expectations have killed it for me... I guess that's why I did the TMOD. Anything to avoid doing another epic with a detailed story that has to have the same level of play as SOB and PQ.

That's sad to hear.. what are you gonna do then Dmod-wise? Or nothing at all?
