My First Game Jam!

Just participated in my first ever game jam this past week.

I made a game from scratch in 48 hours as part of the gm(48) (stands for Game Maker 48 hours) game jam. I think you guys can appreciate how hard it is to make something in that amount of time (many of you have made D-mods or resources), so I thought I'd share it here. It's nowhere near a perfect game that I made (for example, it's probably a bit too challenging, so I won't be offended if you don't beat it), but I'm very proud of the accomplishment and that I was able to actually finish it. It also has some of that old computer game vibe like Dink Smallwood, so I think you all can appreciate that.

Feel free to try out some of the other contestant's games too and leave constructive feedback if you are interested, we can always use some!

That's a really nice game! Good job! It looks really good and polished and it's overall a nice experience for a game made in two days!

2nd generation. No easy way to be free.
Thanks for showing us this. I was surprised at what could be accomplished during such a short development cycle.

Is the Game Jam environment one that encourages such low resolution or was that your choice in design as part of "some of that old computer game vibe"?

Thanks, everyone!

The main reason I chose the lower resolution is because I'm much more skilled at making art quickly for a lower resolution (the character and enemies are only 12x12 pixels and the blocks are only 8x8 pixels). If I had done a higher resolution (say, 32x32 for the character) I would have needed a team member to do graphics or I would have run out of time. But one thing I've been trying to learn is that you should turn your limitations into advantages so I still tried to make it look decent in the time I had.

Well, the results of the game jam are in. I got 7th place out of 65 entries (48 after some were disqualified). Couldn't be happier with how it turned out.
