The Dink Network

Just came across the news that valve is ending greenlight and its replacement will be called steam direct.

All a dev needs to do to release a game on steam would be to fill out some paperwork and pay money. Do you think seth would be interested in this ? i recall his earlier concern was about getting the votes in greenlight.

I really hope we can do something with dink in 2017 at least.

I mean, you had to pay for green light anyways. The only difference now is that you don't need a demand for your game prior to releasing it on steam.

They said they did this to "decrease the noise in the submission pipeline" (we all know what that means). I trust 'em, guys. Let them do their thing

Once again, is there really a need for Dink to be on steam? You can download it quite easily here, as well as more than enough support for modding.

Really don't see a reason for it myself.

Seth also isn't keen on Steam at all for any of his games, it appears. Numerous people have made similar petitions in regards to Growtopia which have fallen on deaf ears. Makes sense since devs must pay to have their game on there and big fat gaben takes a cut from every sale.

He's also documented his numerous gripes with the iOS store and the Android Play Store over the years suggesting that he's not keen on middlemen when it comes to selling stuff.

Honestly I probably wouldn't be either. However, the iOS store, android play, steam, etc... are more than just middlemen, they're markets. They're good to use as tools/platforms to bring a wider audience to your work. I can understand why he doesn't like them, but I think it's a relatively poor move from a business side of things. Not that putting Dink on Steam would make him money, but growtopia certainly would. Maybe I'm wrong though. Seth seems to be doing pretty well for an indie developer so he must be doing something right.

Well there's itch.io as an alternative. You can upload a game there and make it either free or not without even waiting.

As for the revenue, you can set how much % of the money you get you wanna give to the site.

This site is excellent enough to carry on dink probably forever but it would be interesting always to get more people into the dink world, who knows it might spark something in seth to revisit dink universe.

Hope that steam direct is refined further before release, broken releases are not much of a issue on steam these days since you can refund easily on them.

Still it would be shocking if one can just release a game on steam after filling out stuff , pay one time fees.

The main problem is deciding if dink were to be released on some of the pc platforms what version would be best ? Dink hd ? or 1.08 or another fresh edition ?

Another fresh edition, duh! Dink HD is a terrible port and 1.08 is well, outdated and has compatibility issues with modern systems.

Dink Smallwood 3D!

Would be nice if the community would be asked to make a fresh edition for dink , i was already impressed with what dink smallwood achievement edition had done.

That would be a nice idea To rebuild Dink on a new engine (open-source of course). Maybe even expand on it. Make the world bigger, with more side quests/dungeons/things to do. Kind of like Bethesda games! That would be straight up awesome.
But if it were to be 3D, how would it look like? :-?

no, not like bethesda games. we want dink to be finished and not totally broken.

Bethesda is terrible with making dungeons as they are literally copy and paste with nothing unique that makes them different, as for sidequests, most of the time are just fetching quests.

The community should improve the engine or rewrite it to match modern standard while bringing new features and expanded modability.

OK when I said Bethesda, I meant the same freedom and world size. Ya know what I mean

Maybe unity is the way to start ? i noticed that fans of the shadowrun snes are making the modern remake using the newer shadowrun dragonfall release

someone once popped into the dink IRC saying they were gonna make dink in godot engine.

buuuuut, i've migrated to the discord dink, so i dunno if they've popped up again.

Jesus i had a dream last night where someone made dink smallwood using rpg maker and put it on steam

it was a vision.

Bumping this up a ton of games are getting released on steam each day. Should we try to do anything with dink ? maybe ask seth again ??

What issues ? So lets say if the best modders of the community got together and remade/remaster/re-released dink smallwood on steam/gog for example there would be issues ?

also free dink exists which strips the copyrighted stuff right ?

Or if the best modders of the community made a fan based proper sequel to the game and it cant be put on steam with seth's blessings ??

After watching the age of empires announcements yesterday my nostalgia for dink kicked in...

All of the aoe games are getting definitive edition releases and they are making aoe 4...

We should do something new with dink....

Forgotten empires the people who are doing the modern aoe releases were just fan modders of the aoe series , if Microsoft promoted them to take over the job from their own studios , i think we can do better.
