This is basically an improvement project for the original game where I will pretty much add, change, fix some stuff for the original game. Of course it will be in a form of a DMOD or ZIP file. I'll be honest, even though the game is good, there are some things that don't make sense like, why is Renton not guarding the Stonebrook? or why Midler didn't appear in other moments like Kernsin etc.

There is if you play Cocomonkey's Achievement edition.

In other news, the Volcano of Doom has erupted, killing several ants and destroying the incredibly tiny island it was on. King Daniel has called to action his knights to investigate the situation. Eye witness accounts describe the effort as a waste of tax payer money to which King Daniel responded by taxing them even more.

Also, once you unlock a certain achievement there's an alternate storyline you can play where dink kills the toll guy on the first bridge.

I am aware of the Achievement Edition and it's changes that brough. Though I have not played it. My Improvement Project will bring more dialogues and changes to some scenes to make things more interesting. I will give one hint though: Milder will make appear more often than the original game.

You will be able to control him and yeah he will say something. Also Renton will stay on guard, even when you read the message from your aunt. After all, it's his job to guard the village rather than leave somewhere else for no reason.

Hey, maybe Renton was killed when you could leave the village. Maybe the Alk nuts were really evil beings that killed him & Dink's mother wanted to burn them alive... or just eat them alive..... or kidnap them... or (ADD MISC STATEMENT HERE)

Will Renton ever do anything else like give a quest to help with guarding duty? Also will there be any radiant quests or bounties?

Well, now that I think about it, there is at least one armored guy dead in the Darklands, and Renton totally disappears. So it's not impossible. I'll have to look at the dead knight's color though (doesn't mean the king couldn't have got him new armor, but I doubt that).

There's a red knight in the Darklands who was killed by some slayers. There were some red knights early on who try to kill some dude with a gold piece and Dink called them royal guards, so maybe Renton became a royal guard and went off to the Darklands to get slaughtered.

I can imagine those two just throwing golden coins at that dude, just to kill him. Instead, he picks them up and leaves.

I also doubt Renton became a royal guard, if he was, he would mention that beforehand.

I think the red knights were probably bandits or at least some kind of gang, I don't think Daniel is that desperate as to spend money on guards to hunt down one guy with little gold, the bridge taxman is probably richer. Also Dink would be more of a wanted man since he usually kills them & maybe the guards in the lock-picker's apartment.

@Goku, can we have a hint on the area the secret project will we worked on in?

Just like the Heavensward, Dan's Royal Guard is probably very into abusing their power. If not for the gold, then for the fun of torturing a peasant. And hey, cops do it too. It is weird that toll bridge guy got away with everything though. He's sort of...right across from the castle.

I've planned to add some difficulty for the game, as well as modify the bonuses when you level up.

Peasant - Easy Mode. You start with 4 attack, 2 defense and 2 magic, shops sell their stuff at 1/2 the price and you can choose 2 bonuses per level up.
Knight - Normal Mode. You start with 3 attack, 1 defense and 1 magic, shops sell their stuff at normal price and you can choose 2 bonuses per level up.
Hero - Hard Mode. You start with just 3 attack, 1 defense and 0 magic, shops sell their stuff at normal price and you can choose 2 bonuses per level up and monsters will always target you.
Legend - Nightmare Mode. You start with 3 attack, 0 defense and magic, shops sell their stuff at a little higher price, you can choose only one bonus per level up, monsters will always target you and move faster and finally no powerups such as Attack/magic/defense potions and a golden heart

As for the modification you can choose to increase your max HP instead of just picking any bonus and then have higher HP. Leveling up also restores all of your health.

Why 2 bonuses per level-up for both knight and hero mode as well? I'm assuming Knight/Normal is meant to emulate the game difficulty as it currently stands in vanilla Dink.

Yes, the knight difficulty is pretty much the same as the normal one. There are reasons why 2 bonuses. normally you get to choose any bonus ya want and then your health increases. That's 2 bonuses. The change i will bring is going to put health increase as a choice instead. Hence 2 bonuses. You could choose to boost up 4 things. Spend both on attack or spend one on magic and another one on defense.

Nightmare difficulty pretty much makes you be extremely careful with your choices, as you have only one shot.

Dude, not swood. Those potions behind trees really help at the beginning.

That's why it's called NIGHTMARE Difficulty for a reason
October 12th 2015, 03:36 PM

You may want to make sure it's possible to even beat Seth on the hardest difficulty. With no potions, golden hearts (!), and only one bonus per level up, you would probably have a hard time getting enough health to even survive a couple hits from him, and that would come at the great cost of dealing any damage to him.

On another note, Peasant, Knight, and Hero difficulties all sound almost the same. There's so many golden hearts in the game that I don't see why you'd want to choose health at a level up when you can just get more defense. I think you get 3 HP points normally per level up in the original game? Even at level 11 that will only add up to the equivalent of 3 golden hearts. I'd probably pump all those extra points into attack and get the herb boots and be even more powerful than ever before (even on hero mode). Perhaps you could change a couple/few golden hearts into a different treasure, and make the health level-up bonus about 5 points? That would make choosing health at level-up feel valuable. Enemies targeting you on hero mode hardly makes it that much harder. I often purposely hit all enemies once so they will target me so I can kill them all at once while they clump together. For Slayers it makes it possible to make them kill each other. Hero mode would make doing that even easier.

Basically, it sounds like Peasant/Knight/Hero are all easier than the original game, mostly due to the fact that you get two stat choices at level up, AND you start with more stats than the original game, even on Hero. On the other hand, Legend (Nightmare?) mode sounds too hard to be fun and maybe not even possible to beat. There should be a bit more distribution there. I'd love to play the original game at a higher challenge level, just not THAT much higher. Consider making Knight mode start with the same stats as the original game (3,0,0) and making Hero mode only give one choice per level without getting rid of powerups. And perhaps, certain enemies could be faster on Hero mode like you've planned for Nightmare mode, though I'm not sure how someone would deal with the really fast pillbugs (especially the ones in the Darklands!) if they were even faster. These suggestions are all assuming you haven't altered the vanilla enemies too much.

As for Nightmare mode, instead of taking all the powerups out of the game and ruining the sense of exploration, perhaps you could change regular potions into "half-potions" which get you one stat per two potions you find. To make things interesting and unique, maybe these half-potions can even be made into any potion you want. It would still be harder since you need two to get one stat. And golden hearts could give 5 hp instead of 10. That would severely increase the difficulty without making it impossible. Regarding raising the prices of all the items in Dink Smallwood, that's probably not a good idea. They are already priced pretty well, and playing higher difficulties will make it harder to get gold anyways. There could definitely be some exceptions, such as maybe herb boots could cost more, since they are pretty cheap in the original game. But I wouldn't make everything cost more.

One last note: for Legend mode, you may have to lower the magic requirements for acid rain, especially if there's no magic potions. Otherwise, the first level ups will all be going into magic.

Phew...I know I made a lot of suggestions there but you can take them or leave them, it's your project after all! Just wanted to point out some of the potential problems you may run into, but there is always different ways you can alleviate these problems, if you are creative. Take Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix for example. The hardest difficulty actually gives you EXTRA abilities and makes you deal MORE damage compared to the difficulty under it. But it also roughly halves your max hp, making it very easy to die if you are careless. It makes it harder, but it also makes it more fun. It's good to consider that making EVERYTHING harder may not always be the best course of action.

I want to be able to fight a lot of people in that game.

One - I want a full side quest about dismantling and destroying the cast.

Two - I want to find charlie and buy the house. Then charlie burns the house down with you in it but you escape through some underground system. Now you hunt charlie down believing him to be the one who burned your house down and killed your mother. After you find him it turns out he didn't burn your first home down and isn't responsible for your mother's death, but you're still mad about that second house so you fight him anyways.

Three - I want to fight that old guy that teaches you water magic.

Four - I want to see martridge return post-game and then after a series of martridge quests you'll eventually end up fighting him.

Also, I'd love to see some stuff post-game that hints and develops mystery island. I think that'd be really cool.

hey, might i suggest a dark souls difficulty setting? it would go something like this - -

monsters with attack sequences have their attack frames' hitboxes increased in size by about 300-500%. or even higher. just make it so you're hit by things that shouldn't have even come close to hitting you.

all monsters, including pillbugs can kill dink in 1-2 hits.

the inventory system is changed making it a convoluted mess with text all over the place. game can't be paused ever.

all equipment has a pointless strength requirement.

the game lags like hell, even worse if you don't have a monitor or tv with a high enough refresh rate.

all dink's attacks take about 10 minutes to happen as he swings through glue air in a wide arc.

dink's magic has limited casts.

bombs are instead thrown, and always miss. enemies now have bombs and never run out.

and finally, dragons one shot you if you go off the intended path, absorb loads of damage, and just sit around, potentially giving you the chance to shoot a million arrows into them.
