I thought it would be an interesting thread for everyone to post what they do. Like where do you work, if you do work. Basically, what you do for a living.

Most people already know what I do.

So, what do you do?

I also steal Cookies on the side. And by on the side I mean, all the time.

I am a currently unemployed nineteen year old who desperately needs to finish the last credit and a half to graduate, lest I settle for the dreaded G.E.D.
I write books and make games, and am currently learning how to use a program that requires you to make sprites and know a bit of scripting to operate fully. (Called OHRRPGCE)

I am currently working toward self-publishing my first book, Wolfen and am focusing on my first (technically second) serious game called Drakenmoor: The First Cycle (working title). With that, I'm focusing first on the plotline, as well as the graphics. (Right now, all I've done is some grass.)

All that is actually interesting, I hope it works out for you.

Hypnotism is a dangerous art, Dack, and if one is skilled at it, a very tempting and dangerous one at that.
Forcing a person to love you through hypnotic triggers is both risky and morally malignant. Not only are there several ways that it could go wrong, but if it does go wrong and they learn of what the hypnotist has done, it would not be pretty. (Not to mention, it's easy for them to become psycho stalker in which they kill anyone who shows interest in the hypnotist.)

Rob, isn't it true that hypnosis is basically based around shock? Which is why hypnotists always want you to focus on something (like a spot on a card or the palm of their hand), so your concentration is elsewhere? Then they shock you and sort of overdrive and lock your subconcious? Kinda similar to when you're in a bad car crash, and you're told to do something. It's much more likely that you'll follow people's commands cause your brain is in shock. Correct?

Just curious.

That is one of the ways yes, and it is the most used in the street and on stage entertainment, because it looks impressive. Not based around it though, that would imply the whole practice is based around shock, but one of the ways to induce hypnosis certainly is. There's also the progressive relaxation method where you sort of slowly lul them into it, and also the fixation method, which takes them into a guided daydream to get them there. There's many ways actually. But I would say the shock and confusion methods are the most used.

I met a guy who said he was once hypnotized into believing he was drunk, even tho the hypnotist only gave him water to drink. He was walking and talking for a while like the brain thought he actually was wasted as hell. Street entertainment and practical jokes aside, hypnosis must be a very interesting field to study!

My main job is split into 2 different areas. Partly it's software development using VB.NET and the other half is working for a company that sells jewellery online - I do customer service, order management etc.

As a side line, some friends in America have a business selling branded clothing on eBay, Hollister, A&F, Levi's etc, American stuff which sells well in the UK. They ship stuff over to me, I store it here and do the packing and posting in the evenings. They're also using my eBay account at the moment

I'm a physicist and high school physics teacher. However, I stopped teaching about a year ago and am now doing a PhD in materials science and engineering. I'm working on 3-D printers; we had some really good press coverage recently with our metal 3-D printer, which you may have heard about.

When I'm done with this, I don't know what I'll do. I might continue in science, or I might go back to being a teacher. Or perhaps I'll do something else entirely.

True, but I have yet to be published, either by myself or others. A written book is little when it is not shared. I cannot call myself a true writer of fiction until I have been published.
February 11th 2014, 12:30 AM

I make ebooks at a publisher. Sometime I want to go to grad school for computer science and see if I can get into AI. It feels like a completely unrealistic goal to me, but when I'm honest with myself, in the realm of programming it's what I really care about.

After that I might want to get another degree in psychotherapy and become a counselor. I'll probably be 97 at that point.

Sometimes I like to listen to hypnosis inductions for relaxation. I don't normally follow the suggestions, but just listening to them is relaxing. Robj, your hypnotist/magician ways remind me of this guy.

Meh, it's part of a self-esteem thing that I've been dealing with for years. Regardless of what other people say about me or my works, I view the actual publication of one of my stories, one of the ones that I'm actually comfortable with releasing unto the world, as a transition from my old life of simply existing as an immature person into a self-sufficient person.
February 11th 2014, 01:06 AM

Hmmm, you may want to supplement that with other transitions, KrisKnox. Getting published with a traditional publisher is tough, apparently. But you'll have better luck if you get an agent.

WRITING

The main sail ripples noisily behind me and I turn to watch it. A particularly strong wind rises and I see Menzobbaraca eye his infernal compass once more. I sense an excitement coming from him. I can taste it in the air, almost as if he sweats anticipation itself. We may soon be calling to port once more. Watching the filament websails, great silver nets of vast expanse toiling in the wind, I remember the feel of air on my neck. This wind that drives our ship, it is not a wind that can be felt, not by myself nor any of the crew. It drives us through this abyssal void, caught by the ancient magic of the websails. but to us this everlasting night is as still as if there were no wind at all. It is one of the few things I still miss about my former life, the wind. I have been sailing on this ship for a long time now, I think, and rarely have the opportunity to feel such things.

The man difference between writers and teachers is that teachers have to deal with multiple people on a daily basis while retaining their sanity. Writers deal with a few people intermittently while slowly going insane.

We're all made of atoms, which in turn is pretty much energy holding itself together. So, for all intents and purposes, real life is merely the collective consciousness of existence living separate from itself in order to better understand itself. Positive view points (Such as people such as I, or IPD) and Negative view points (Such as Punisher's) are all equally valid.

However, the topic of whether or not RL is deserving of being called RL or not is a topic that (hopefully) would go into a new topic, where everyone would remain civil whilst debating and giving their perspectives.
