Whats the first dmod released?
Who knows what was the first Dmod released? And how long after the origonal game? I would check the dates in the list but cant be bothered! lol
I'm almost certain that would have to be Mike Snyder's Scar of David.
Mystery Island.
mystery island doesnt count!
I think ill give the early ones a try and see how they have improved since then. thanks guys

Isn't it The Search for Milli Vanilli?
Wongo's right. It's the Search for Milli Vanilli. Mystery Island was released WAY after, somewhere around 2000.
I'm sure that ScarD was released before SrchMilli. It was the first Dmod I played; I completed it before I finished Dink Smallwood XD
All right, maybe Wongo's wrong. But in all honesty, who gives a shoot?
The whole world. Let's go kill wongo.
I did some fact-checking with the readme.txt files (where available), and I found the following:
The Search for Milli Vanilli is the first D-Mod ever released, the minimum Dink version required (according to the readme) is 1.01, and it even works with the demo.
The Scar of David is the first non-RTSoft D-Mod ever released. Its readme file lists 1.03 as minimum Dink version. The readme.txt also explicitly states that it was, at the time, the only D-Mod besides Milli Vanilli.
Mystery Island was later; it uses some DinkC features that didn't exist until Dink 1.05. It was included on the CD from which I got Dink (good ol' freeware collection CDs), and I distinctly remember Dinking in 2000. This was with Dink 1.06.
Sources: readme.txt of Milli Vanilli and Scar of David. dinkc.chm, the "sp_picfreeze()" page. The readme.txt of Mystery Island is less useful for determining its release date.

So, I was technically correct in all of this information? Man, I rule!
More like 50/50 (EDIT: Actually, make that 25/75 for first saying Scar of David ). Mystery Island was released in 1998, possibly earlier.
What do you mean? The original Dink was in stores from 1998 to 1999, before it was made freeware. Mystery Island was created somewhere in 2000, cause it was called brand new on the Mikro H&HR 2000. Many D-Mods we call classics these days, were created much before Mystery Island.
Well, I can tell for certain that Mystery Island was released before 2000 (which is roughly when I first played Dink; Mystery Island wasn't new at that time). When exactly is a guess, but I think it's somewhat likely that Mystery Island was released with v1.05: That version introduced some rather specific-sounding commands (like sp_picfreeze()) that few dmods have used except for Mystery Island. More importantly though, most of the stuff in the Mystery Island folder date to June 1998, which is probably pretty close to its release date.
As for Mikrobitti... It's a third party Finnish computer magazine. 'Nuff said.

But if it was created before 2000, it would have been created before, or just a few months after Dink turned freeware, which certainly did not happen.
Why not?
If you need more convincing, check out tut2.htm in Mystery Island's tutorial folder... It has a few dates in it, all of which are '98.

Why not?
Um... because it did not? In his 15-8-99 TDN interview, Seth talked about Prophecy of the Ancients being a great D-Mod (so that's proof the interview indeed did happen that date, or at least late that year), and he said he will never create a Dink game again, although he may include Dink in some of his future games. Now, I very much doubt he managed to create Mystery Island, during the rest of the year (4 months), so it had to be released somewhere around 2000.

Mystery Island had already been released when that interview took place. Probably more than a year earlier. Wouldn't it be weird of Seth to say he has no more plans to do stuff with Dink, then release a dmod the next year?
Mystery Island was released in 1998! Believe it!!

Now, 1999 I would still somehow believe, but '98 would mean that it was done just after when Dink was made which did not happen because when Mystery Island was made, the "Dink team" had already broken up and they couldn't get the whole team back for the job. Seth has also said later that he did not have any more plans for Dink but he wanted to try to make a "D-Mod" himself, so he changed his mind. So it's obvious he changed his mind. The next year, I'm not so sure of it, it was just a guess. But I know that Mystery Island was released sometime 2000-2002. Could be very late '99 too.

Well they'd definitely got up to the sailing bit by the 24th of May '98... though talking of D-Mods I suppose that doesn't mean much, it could still be in production now a mere 13 years later
Sweet jesus you are so ducking brickheaded. As if all the stuff I already mentioned wasn't compelling enough, here's a deathblow:

That website is outdated. And even a not-so-outdated website known as The Dink Network says that Mystery Island BMP graphics were uploaded January 1st, 1990.
Here's the Wiki article of Dink Smallwood, written by Dan Walma himself (some bits seem edited later by other Dinkers though), and in the "Modifications" section it says that Mystery Island was developed by RTSoft in 1999. So, yeah. I was wrong by one year. Gimme a break, I'm still awesome!

It was an epic battle! Who won? You decide!
I think that Skull's wiki page reference gave a breakthrough in the argument.
Why would you do that for? Now it seems like you changed the Wiki article and I changed it back. Making it look like I think it was made in '98.
EDIT: Also, quoting Christiaan: "I remember being super excited for Mystery Island, so it definitely wasn't packed with the game originally". If it was made in '98, why wouldn't it have been with the original game? Besides, if Christiaan is to be trusted, he has the original CD since '99, and he remembers that Island came later.

Maybe it was released as a D-Mod and then only packed with the main game sometime later? Dunno, but don't confuse the release date with the date it was included on the CD.

I remember getting Mystery Island with the freeware release on a magazine cover disc from a friend along with a front-end loader for playing it with. This was in 1999. Dink SmallWood sales were apparently not ground-breaking enough to warrant another production run of discs.

Same, although I got it in 2000, from Mikrobitti. So that takes the chance away of it being created sometime later. '99 sounds also a tiny bit too old (maybe you're remembering wrong ), but with all the evidence, I'll just trust Toast on this one.

Yes, I just realized that. That's what I was pointing to in my previous post.

Wow, Scratcher, you really bother arguing with Skull? You should know by now that it's like arguing with a wall.
I do it for the satisfaction of getting through that wall. =)
You didn't get through that wall. If anything, you were proven wrong. As was I, though.
Alas, there's no chance now that it was brought up. I did get halway through though.
So, yeah. I was wrong by one year. Gimme a break, I'm still awesome!

Now let's debate about something else: Jackie Chan vs. Chuck Norris.

Jackie Chan. I lost all respect for Chuck a few years ago.

When I argue with a wall... I always make sure I'm well equipped.
- Sledgehammer
- Chainsaw
- Sledgesaw
- Chainhammer
- A sort of a mix of all of the above which is a chainsaw attached to the end of a pnuematically powered hammer-type thing. Requires a reinforced chainsaw
- Toothpick (well, with all the overkill I need SOMETHING to balance it all out, don't I?)

Imagine the paranoia of the guy who made the first DMOD?
A lot to live up to eh?
We can just play with them knowing a lot have gone before and we have got to be better than some in the end! But those early guys had it all to prove!
