Problem with DMOD Dry

Dry

I've recently downloaded and installed Dry like I do with every other DMOD. It starts up fine, nice menu screen and everything. Then when I click on START it takes me to the same screen that is shown in the menu. And I can do nothing - that's the only screen.

When I checked the map in the FrontEnd by opening the FrontEnd, choosing Dry, the going to Edit, it came up with a blank map.

However, when I opened the map in Dry's directory manually, I found a complete map.

So I'm assuming that something is wrong with the script that opens the map, but I don't know how to fix it.

I think it has the v1.2 patch installed.

Has anybody else experienced a similar problem or has an idea of how this problem could be remedied?

might be that the file was corrupt redownload or something

Really?

Well, I think it might only be one line of the script. Does anyone know of where that line could be? I think it could be the one refering to the file map.dat . Which line is that?

Zip files have built-in checksums, so if it was corrupt your unzipping program would have told you.

As for your problem... I'm not sure. Map.dat is loaded automatically; there isn't a script that controls it.

Make sure that the map.dat/dink.dat files are in the correct directory... they should show up in C:\Program Files\Dink Smallwood\Dry\ if you used the default directories for everything. If that fails, try re-installing it.

I've tried reinstalling it. The problem persists.

Everything is in the correct place. The map.dat file even has a full map. Everything seems normal in regards to files being in the right place.

I just don't understand why this is happening. :/

So I take it nobody else has had this problem or knows how to remedy it?

So am I stuck not being able to play this DMOD? I really want to play it.

Is there some way I can play this DMOD?

Well if your computer is screwed to that extent, then no. Otherwise stop playing about with the game, it works fine for everyone else so you must've done something wrong along the way

I guess trying to steer the conversation towards a *solution* doesn't work. How about which script line refers to map.dat? That might be corrupt for some reason.

My computer is not screwed. It runs perfectly.

You're too shallow. "it works fine for everyone else so *you* must've done something wrong".

There are millions of things that could have gone wrong that weren't *my* fault. They could even have been yours.

For those who care, here's an excerpt from start.c . The problem may lie around here somewhere.

//Create the START button....

&crap = create_sprite(76, 434, 14, 194, 1);
sp_script(&crap, "start-1");
sp_noclip(&crap, 1);
sp_touch_damage(&crap, -1);

//Create the CONTINUE button....

&crap = create_sprite(314, 434, 14, 195, 1);
sp_script(&crap, "start-2");
sp_noclip(&crap, 1);
sp_touch_damage(&crap, -1);

Thank you to those who try to help.

Nope, that looks standard from the d-mod skeleton. Run the d-mod in debug mod and post the contents of the file here.

How do I run it in debug mode?

Any fool can use a computer. Many do.
Press ALT + D during the game or start DinkFrontEnd and select the thingy so it starts with debug mode.

Dude I'm saying don't complain about the game when nobody else has had this problem. And listen to the RedMan's advice, ther's no line going to the Map.dat

Weird. What FrontEnd do you use? Try another one, perhaps that's it. Otherwise I really wouldn't know, except to download it again, and see what happens. The patch is only about some adjustments in scripts - nothing serious.

I wasn't complaining about the DMOD. I said that I really wanted to play it. I merely suggested that the problem might be a misplaced code somewhere.

Anyway, I ran the debug. I started the DMOD, clicked on "Start", and it took me to the first square (which was the menu picture...but I couldn't do anything but save my game). I punched around a bit.

I'm pretty sure The Network Officer said the last 20 lines... tbh I never played dry but check for a key-162.c? I really haven't a clue. Reinstall everything. Do other DMOD's work alright?

Acctaully, that was good. The debug mode is not report any major problems. I would reinstall it, read the help page (on the side bar) about installing ot make sure you did it right, and try it again.

All other DMODs work perfectly. Nothing seems out of place. I just don't understand why this one isn't working.

Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! I think I know the problem!

Once you click on the Start button in the front end, you get the game's splash screen, which typically has Start, Load and Cancel buttons. But in this game, those are invisible until you run the mouse over them. Then they show and have audio.

I bet he just hasn't run the mouse around the bottom area of the splash screen! I know it stumped me for a minute or two!
